How Much Does Maya Cost? Maya Pricing Guide (2026)
Table of Contents
So, how much does Maya cost? In the United States, Autodesk Maya costs $255 month to month, $2,010 for one year, or $6,025 for a three-year commitment as of August 11, 2026. These are USD prices before tax; the annual plan is paid upfront, while the three-year plan is paid in three annual installments.
The right option depends on how you work. A qualifying independent artist can pay $330 per year for Maya Indie, an occasional user can spend Flex tokens only on days they open Maya, and an eligible student or educator can use Maya at no cost for educational work. The trial is useful for evaluation, but it isn’t a free production license.
How much does Maya cost right now?
The current Autodesk Maya price changes with the billing term. Autodesk sometimes presents the annual plan as roughly $168 per month, but that is a calculated monthly equivalent of $2,010 divided by 12. It is not the true $255 month-to-month plan.
The table gives a direct answer to “how much does Maya cost?” for each legitimate access route available to US buyers:
Access route | Verified US price or cost | Billing and commitment | Who qualifies? | Commercial use | Main limit | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Standard monthly | $255 per month, tax extra | Paid monthly, no long-term commitment; normally auto-renews | Eligible buyers | Yes | Named-user seat | A concentrated commercial project |
Standard annual | $2,010 per year, tax extra | One-year commitment, paid annually; normally auto-renews | Eligible buyers | Yes | Named-user seat | Regular professional use |
Standard three-year | $6,025 total, tax extra | Three-year commitment, paid in three annual installments | Eligible buyers | Yes | Remaining installments are still owed if renewal is disabled | Stable long-term use |
Maya Indie | $330 per year, US subtotal | Annual only | Users who meet regional, revenue, project, and work rules | Yes, while eligible | One license per user or organization | A qualifying independent artist or small studio |
Flex for full Maya | 6 tokens per 24 hours, estimated at $18 per billable day | Prepaid tokens; no fixed subscription term | Users in supported regions who are assigned to a Flex team | Yes | Tokens expire after 365 days | Occasional users and overflow seats |
Maya trial | $0 for 30 days | Temporary access that expires automatically | Eligible evaluators with an Autodesk account | No | Evaluation only; cannot be renewed or extended | Testing Maya before paying |
Education access | $0 for one year, renewable while eligible | One-year, single-user access | Verified eligible students and educators | No | Educational purposes only | Coursework, teaching, and educational research |
Autodesk advertises a 33% saving for its one-year and three-year options compared with paying monthly. Using the listed prices, 12 monthly payments total $3,060, so the annual plan saves $1,050, or 34.3%. Three years paid monthly would total $9,180, so the three-year plan saves $3,155, or 34.4%. Those percentages are editorial calculations based on current US prices; Autodesk’s 33% figure is a rounded marketing claim.
The three-year billing terms matter. Autodesk charges the first annual installment at purchase and the others on the next two anniversaries. Turning off auto-renew stops renewal after the committed term, but it doesn’t cancel the remaining annual installments.
Prices are regional. For example, the India Maya storefront listed ₹16,520 monthly and ₹128,620 annually on the same verification date. A current India three-year total and tax treatment weren’t visible on the public product page, so they should not be inferred from US pricing or a currency conversion.
When is Flex cheaper than a Maya subscription?
Autodesk Flex is prepaid, pay-as-you-go access. Full Maya uses 6 tokens per user for each 24-hour billable period, estimated at $18 in the United States. The charge begins when an assigned user opens and signs in to Maya. Reopening Maya during the same 24-hour window doesn’t create another Maya charge.
At current US rates, the break-even calculation against the Autodesk Maya monthly subscription is simple:
$255 divided by $18 equals 14.17 days.
Fourteen Flex days cost $252.
Fifteen Flex days cost $270.
The monthly plan becomes cheaper at 15 billable days in a single month. Against the annual subscription, $2,010 divided by $18 equals 111.67. Flex costs $1,998 for 111 billable days and $2,016 for 112, so the annual subscription becomes cheaper from day 112 in a year.

Maya Indie changes the math for an eligible user. Its $330 annual price divided by $18 equals 18.33, so Indie costs less than Flex from the nineteenth billable day of the year. Eligibility is the deciding factor, not just the calculation.
These comparisons assume one US user, the base price of $3 per token, no tax or volume discount, no charges from other Autodesk products, and no tokens expiring unused. Autodesk currently lets a customer start with 33 tokens for $99. Tokens expire 365 days after purchase, don’t roll over, and a pack cannot be divided among different Autodesk teams.
Flex works well for occasional access, but it isn’t metered by the hour after Maya launches. Closing the app doesn’t pause the 24-hour period. An administrator must also add the user to the relevant team and assign Maya access. If the same user has both Flex and a Maya subscription, Autodesk uses the subscription first.
Who qualifies for a Maya Indie license?
The Maya Indie offering provides the same Maya features and functionality as the standard edition at a much lower annual price, but it isn’t a universal freelancer discount. In the United States, annual gross revenue from creative work must be below $100,000, the project cannot be valued above $100,000, and only one Indie license is allowed per user or organization.
Funding and client relationships count too. Autodesk’s examples distinguish between selling a completed digital product for a fixed price and working for hire. An eligible artist may be able to sell their own fixed-price digital product to a larger organization, but hourly, daily, or weekly work for an organization above the threshold requires full commercial Maya. A project with funding over the applicable threshold can also be ineligible before it earns revenue.
Maya Indie is annual only and can support commercial work while every rule is met. It includes integrated Arnold for interactive rendering and the usual Maya subscription benefits. There is no separate Indie trial, so the regular Maya trial is the evaluation route.

Availability, thresholds, and pricing vary by country. Verified annual creative-revenue thresholds include less than $100,000 in the United States, CAD $100,000 in Canada, USD $75,000 in Türkiye, and USD $50,000 in both India and Brazil. Check the official country list and local terms rather than converting the US limit.
The Autodesk Maya cost in India also shows why local checkout matters. The verified Indie checkout subtotal was ₹18,000, with ₹3,240 GST for a ₹21,240 total. Autodesk’s product-specific FAQ says Indie subscriptions in India and China require manual renewal, although the India checkout displayed generic auto-renew wording. Buyers in those markets should confirm the actual renewal setting in Autodesk Account after purchase.
If your income, funding, project value, or work-for-hire relationship sits near a limit, ask Autodesk to confirm eligibility. A lower price won’t help if the entitlement doesn’t cover the work being done.
Is Maya free through a trial or Education access?
Maya doesn’t have a verified permanently free, unrestricted edition of the full software. Downloading an installer also doesn’t grant ongoing usage rights. The two legitimate no-cost routes serve different purposes.
The Autodesk Maya free trial lasts 30 days from the date of download and is available for Maya 2027 on 64-bit Windows, macOS, and Linux. The current intake requires an Autodesk account and shows phone verification, but it doesn’t show a payment-card field before download. The trial expires automatically, cannot be renewed or extended, and Autodesk’s trial terms limit it to evaluation rather than profit, production, or commercial work.
The Autodesk Education plan gives verified eligible students and educators free, one-year, single-user access. It can be renewed annually while the user remains eligible, and the software has the same features and functionality as the paid edition. The license is limited to educational purposes, so it cannot cover paid freelance work, professional production, or other for-profit activity.

There isn’t a separate Maya student price beyond that eligibility-based access. Autodesk verifies enrollment or employment at a qualified educational institution, often through SheerID or supporting documents. A recent graduate who no longer qualifies should check Maya Indie or a paid commercial route instead of continuing to rely on education rights.
Which Maya option fits your situation?
The practical choice comes down to commercial status, eligibility, and frequency of use. Use these starting points:
Student or educator: Choose Education access for eligible coursework, teaching, or educational research. Get a commercial entitlement before accepting paid work.
Hobbyist evaluating Maya: Start with the trial. If you want to keep using Maya, check Indie eligibility or consider a genuinely free alternative such as Blender.
Independent artist or recent graduate: Check Maya Indie first. Confirm the local revenue, funding, project-value, and work-relationship rules before buying.
Freelancer working for a large client: Use full Maya when you are hired on a time basis by an organization over the threshold. Your personal income isn’t the only eligibility test.
Short-term contractor: At US prices, Flex costs less for up to 14 billable days in a concentrated month. The monthly subscription is cheaper at 15 or more.
Regular professional: The annual subscription is usually the logical standard route at 112 or more Maya days per year, unless you qualify for Indie.
Small studio: Assign annual named-user seats to regular staff and consider Flex for occasional contributors. Compare the Media & Entertainment Collection if multiple Arnold licenses or its other tools have real value to your pipeline.
Larger production team: Contact Autodesk about Business, Enterprise, Token Flex, or contract-specific options. Ordinary online Maya seats are named-user access, not old-style floating licenses.
The Maya subscription cost is only one part of the decision. A route that looks cheaper can cost more if tokens expire unused, if it doesn’t permit the intended work, or if the studio needs separate rendering and hardware capacity.
What costs are not included in the Maya price?
A Maya entitlement covers the application and its licensed use. It doesn’t automatically cover every production expense around it.
Arnold rendering: Interactive Arnold rendering inside Maya’s interface doesn’t require a separate Arnold license. Batch, command-line, and render-farm work does. Autodesk says each render node needs an Arnold license, licensed per machine. Current US Arnold pricing is $55 monthly, $430 annually, or $1,285 for three years.
Collections: The US Media & Entertainment Collection costs $2,790 per year and includes Maya, five Arnold licenses, and other Autodesk media tools. One annual Maya seat plus one annual Arnold seat totals $2,440, so the collection costs $350 more than that narrow pairing. Its value improves only when the additional Arnold licenses or applications will actually be used.
Plug-ins, assets, training, and tax: Third-party tools, model or texture libraries, courses, and support outside the subscription are separate purchases. US Autodesk prices are listed before applicable tax, and other storefronts can show different prices or tax handling.
Hardware: Maya 2027 system requirements list 8 GB of RAM as the minimum, recommend 16 GB or more, and require 7 GB of installation space. Those are entry requirements, not a promise that every animation, simulation, render, or large scene will run comfortably. More memory and GPU capacity can become a real project cost.

If Maya already runs well on your workstation, paying for remote hardware adds unnecessary expense. If a weak laptop, temporary production spike, or large scene creates a real constraint, Vagon Cloud Computer can provide an isolated remote Windows workstation with NVIDIA GPU options, persistent storage, and usage billed by the minute. For example, its Flame tier was listed at $2.27 per hour with 32 GB RAM and a 24 GB NVIDIA A10G GPU on August 11, 2026; prices can vary by region and storage costs extra.
Autodesk permits some virtualization for eligible single-user subscriptions and Flex, subject to its virtualization policy and product terms. The named user still needs to sign in, and Autodesk doesn’t guarantee compatibility with every provider. Vagon supplies computing capacity, not Maya, Maya Indie, a subscription, Education rights, a trial, Flex tokens, Arnold or render-node licenses, plug-ins, assets, or training. It also doesn’t change any Autodesk eligibility or commercial-use rule.
An active Maya subscription or Flex entitlement includes current releases and eligible previous versions. With Maya 2027, Autodesk currently lists Maya 2026, 2025, and 2024 under previous-version access. Those rights end with the entitlement; they don’t become perpetual ownership.
Can you still buy a Maya perpetual license or Maya LT?
Autodesk no longer sells new stand-alone perpetual licenses. Current routes for full Maya are subscription, Maya Indie where eligible, Flex, temporary trial access, and Education access for eligible noncommercial use.
Maya LT is also a legacy product. Sales and renewals ended on December 7, 2022, so old Maya LT prices are not current buying options. Autodesk describes Maya Creative as Maya LT’s evolution, but it is a separate Flex-only product rather than full Maya. Maya Creative currently consumes 1 token per 24-hour period and isn’t feature-identical to Maya, so use Autodesk’s current Maya comparison before treating it as a substitute.
Historical Maya 2016, 2017, 2018, or 2019 prices don’t answer today’s purchasing question either. An active Maya 2027 entitlement provides only the previous versions Autodesk currently makes eligible, not unrestricted access to any old release.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is Maya?
In the United States, Maya is $255 month to month, $2,010 annually, or $6,025 for a three-year commitment paid in three annual installments, before tax. Those prices were verified on August 11, 2026 and can differ by region.
Can you buy Maya without subscription?
You cannot buy a new perpetual Maya license. You can use full Maya without a fixed subscription term through prepaid Flex tokens, but each use triggers a time-limited 24-hour entitlement and the tokens expire after 365 days.
How much RAM to run Maya?
Maya 2027 requires at least 8 GB of RAM and Autodesk recommends 16 GB or more. Complex simulations, rendering, and large production scenes can need more, so treat those figures as the official floor and recommendation rather than a universal production target.
Does Maya include Arnold?
Maya includes integrated Arnold for interactive rendering inside the application. Batch, command-line, and render-farm use require separate Arnold licensing, including one license for each render node.
Does buying Maya include updates?
An active subscription or Flex entitlement includes current releases, updates, and eligible previous versions. Access ends when the entitlement does, so it doesn’t provide lifetime updates or perpetual ownership.
Can Maya Indie be used for client work?
Yes, but only when the user, organization, project, funding, region, and work arrangement meet Autodesk’s local rules. Time-based work for a larger organization can require full Maya even when the freelancer’s own revenue is under the threshold.
The choice is usually clear once you match your legal use and working frequency to the table: Education for eligible learning, Indie for qualifying independent commercial work, Flex for occasional use, monthly for a concentrated project, and annual for regular professional work. If your computer is the limiting factor rather than your Maya entitlement, check Vagon Cloud Computer options after confirming that your Autodesk license permits the planned workflow.
