HOW TO USE GPU
Adobe Illustrator (v.2019 and newer)
Adobe Illustrator is a go-to tool for vector design, known for its precision in creating graphics like logos, illustrations, and web layouts. Enabling GPU acceleration enhances Illustrator's performance by leveraging your graphics card for faster rendering and smoother interactions, especially with large or complex files.
How to Enable GPU Acceleration in Adobe Illustrator
Launch Adobe Illustrator
Open Illustrator from the default path:C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 20##\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe
Activate GPU Performance
Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance.
Check GPU Performance to enable the feature.
Enable Animated Zoom for smoother zooming.
Select Real-Time Drawing and Editing to improve responsiveness while working on vector shapes.
Click OK to apply these changes.
Switch to GPU Preview
Once you have opened or created a project, switch to GPU Preview by selecting View > GPU Preview from the top menu. This ensures Illustrator uses the GPU for rendering, offering faster screen redraws and better navigation.
Top Tips to Speed Up Adobe Illustrator
Keep Your GPU Drivers Updated
Make sure your graphics card drivers are updated to their latest version. Newer drivers often contain optimizations for creative software, improving performance significantly. This is especially true for NVIDIA cards with Studio Drivers optimized for Adobe software.Optimize Artboard and Files
Simplify your artwork by reducing the number of anchor points and using fewer effects. Also, limit the number of layers when possible. Working in Outline Mode (View > Outline
) can further improve performance by reducing screen redraw lag during complex edits.Use an SSD for Storage
If you're experiencing slow file handling or rendering, upgrading to a Solid State Drive (SSD) can provide faster read/write speeds than traditional hard drives, significantly speeding up performance in Illustrator when handling large files.Manage Fonts
Illustrator can slow down if too many fonts are installed. Using a font management tool to limit active fonts to only what’s necessary can improve overall performance.Enable High-Performance GPU
In systems with both integrated and dedicated GPUs (such as laptops), make sure that Illustrator is using the dedicated GPU. For NVIDIA GPUs, this can be done via the NVIDIA Control Panel by setting Illustrator to use the high-performance GPU.
Top Recommended GPUs for Adobe Illustrator
For optimal performance with Illustrator, especially when handling large files or using high-resolution displays, these GPUs are recommended:
NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti
This mid-range GPU offers excellent performance for GPU-accelerated tasks in Illustrator, balancing power and affordability.NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super
A solid option for professionals needing reliable GPU power, especially when working with complex vector graphics.AMD Radeon Pro WX 8200
Ideal for users who want workstation-level performance, this card offers high-precision processing and certified drivers that can handle larger projects in Illustrator.
These GPUs, combined with other optimizations such as SSDs and adequate RAM (at least 16GB), will ensure smooth operation and faster performance in Adobe Illustrator.
