The Challenge

Creating a believable digital human involves pushing many subsystems: skin shading, micro-detail, eyes, teeth, hair, facial rigging, and animation blending. In Unity’s The Heretic, the team used a sophisticated pipeline combining 4D scanning, high-resolution textures, and custom shader graphs to achieve photorealism.


Running that same level of detail locally demands strong GPUs and careful optimization. Distributing the project to clients or collaborators typically means large builds, required installs, or static videos that lose interactivity. Differences in hardware cause visual inconsistency: a face might appear soft, shadows washed out, or frame rate stutter. That breaks the illusion and complicates review.
